Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of a training vessel as a practice-based learning facility in maritime vocational education at Politeknik Pelayaran Barombong, Indonesia. Using a descriptive qualitative case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis involving cadets, instructors, vessel-related personnel, and shipping industry representatives. The findings show that the training vessel effectively bridges classroom theory and onboard practice by enabling cadets to engage directly with navigation instruments, machinery systems, communication procedures, safety drills, and shipboard routines. Training vessel-based learning also strengthens technical competencies, including navigation, engine monitoring, watchkeeping, and emergency response, while developing non-technical competencies such as discipline, teamwork, communication, confidence, adaptability, and professional responsibility. However, its effectiveness is constrained by limited vessel availability, high maintenance demands, insufficient technical personnel, and weak industry collaboration. This study contributes to maritime vocational education by conceptualizing the training vessel as a practice-based maritime learning ecosystem that integrates pedagogical, technical, institutional, and industry-oriented dimensions.
