Abstract

Fe3O4 particles-based Ferrogels have been succesfully fabricated from iron sands from Tulungagung as a main precursors. Ferrogels are hydrogels composites (Polyvinyl alcohol and water) with magnetite particles Fe3O4 as a filler in the range of micro and nanosize. XRD characterizations show that magnetic particles Fe3O4 with both micro and nanosize are fully matched with XRD patterns of Fe3O4 PDF number 11-0626 and 03-0863. Meanwhile, SEM and TEM images reveal that Fe3O4 microsize ranges from 1 to 10 um and Fe3O4 nanosize ranges from 6 to 16 nm. Filler contribution of magnetite Fe3O4 on ferrogles composites can be conducted from its magneto-elasticity characterization. When ferrogels influenced by external magnetic field, the ferrogles respons tend to form hysteresis shape and shifted by reducing magnetite concentration. Ferrogel with particels filler of Fe3O4 microsize is more sensitive in external magnetic field than ferrogels with particles filler in nanosize. This phenomena is caused by remanent magnetic of Fe3O4 in microsize (8,233 emu/gram) which is higher than Fe3O4 (7,995 emu/gram) in nanosize. Finally, the ferrogles response in this research can be developed as artificial muscles from simple until sophisticated actuator.
