MODULAR FORM AND COLLECTIVE NORM: TEMPORAL STRATEGIES FOR THE KAMPUNG TRANSFORMATION
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper rethinks shared housing strategies as a response to social, material, and temporal sustainability in architecture, focusing on modularity and temporality within the context of Indonesian kampungs. While existing discourse explores co-living through social and economic lenses, a critical research gap remains in formulating design-led reflections that can strategically bridge technical modularity with the fluid, organic dwelling practices of local settlements. Employing a qualitative Research through Design approach, the study analyses the architectural competition process as a reflective framework for knowledge production, using the theme of babarengan ("togetherness") as a prototype for collective living. The study identifies three key conceptual findings: kampung-based togetherness as the foundation for spatial programming, modularity as a strategy for material and dimensional articulation, and temporality as an approach to spatial limitations that enables the integration of private and public functions. By utilizing a stilt "stage" system and lightweight industrial materials (such as hollow steel and GRC panels), the design rearticulates local values into an adaptive, contemporary prototype that facilitates participatory construction. Despite limitations regarding site-specific social characteristics and local regulations, the findings demonstrate that shared housing provides an operationalized, future-oriented model that addresses resource constraints and social dynamics through a dynamic, rather than static, architectural process.
